Last Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron surprised the nation by calling a snap election scheduled for the 30th of June and the 7th of July. This decision had an impact on the broadcast of the French national team’s match against Canada, as TF1 postponed coverage to air political debates and reactions instead. This move was unprecedented, as the team had not been delayed on television for 30 years.

While most players have stayed out of the political discourse, Marcus Thuram took a stand during a press conference before the Euros opener against Austria. Thuram, known for his activism against racism, urged French voters to reject the National Rally, a far-right party that has gained traction as the largest opposition to Macron in the upcoming elections.

Expressing his concern over the situation, Thuram emphasized the importance of actively opposing the messages promoted by the National Rally in order to prevent them from coming into power. He highlighted the gravity of the situation and called on citizens to join the fight against the party’s rise.

It is clear that Thuram is passionate about using his platform as a football player to advocate for social change and stand against ideologies that he believes are harmful to society. His appeal to voters reflects his commitment to fighting against discrimination and injustice both on and off the field.
