Marlins designate former AL batting champion Tim Anderson for assignment following dismal first half

The Miami Marlins have reportedly designated shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment after a disappointing first half. Anderson, who is just 31, struggled with the Marlins, hitting .214/.237/.226 over 65 games. He made nine errors at shortstop, leading to his departure from the team. Anderson signed with the Marlins on a one-year, $5 million deal in hopes of rebuilding his value, but his performance did not meet expectations.

Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2013, Anderson had a successful career, with a .288/.316/.442 slash line through 2022. However, his numbers took a significant hit in 2023, prompting the White Sox to decline his $14 million option. After signing with the Marlins, Anderson’s struggles continued, leading to his designation for assignment on July 2.

One factor that may have contributed to Anderson’s decline in 2023 was a knee injury he sustained early in the season. After spraining his MCL in April, Anderson struggled to regain his form upon returning to the field. The injury affected his body mechanics, particularly his front leg, and impacted his performance at the plate for the rest of the season.

While Anderson’s future in the majors is uncertain, there is a chance he could make a comeback if he can address the issues that have plagued him. Otherwise, his major-league career may come to an end.
