Roberto de Zerbi, who has previously managed Palermo, Benevento, and Sassuolo during his career, has reached an “agreement in principle” to become the new manager of Marseille. De Zerbi recently left Brighton after two successful years with the Premier League club. He will be taking over from Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired from football at the end of the previous campaign.

The Italian coach will be joining Marseille in the upcoming days, as the club works on finalizing the details of his appointment. De Zerbi had a successful stint at Brighton, guiding them to a sixth-place finish in his first season and securing European qualification for the first time in the club’s history. However, after finishing 11th in the league and reaching the last 16 of the Europa League last season, it was decided that he would step down.

Gasset, who took over on an interim basis in February, led Marseille to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1. This was the club’s lowest league standing since 2016. With De Zerbi’s appointment, Marseille will be looking to improve on their performance in the upcoming season under the guidance of the experienced coach.
