Marta set to participate in her sixth Olympic Games representing Brazil

Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer Marta has been selected to represent her country at this summer’s Olympics in Paris, making this her sixth appearance at the Games. With 118 goals in 183 games for Brazil, the 38-year-old announced her plans to retire from international football later this year.

Brazil manager Arthur Elias has praised Marta as the “greatest athlete of all time” and acknowledges the value she brings to the team. He expressed confidence in her abilities and emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving success. Marta currently plays for Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League, showcasing her skills at both the club and international levels.

Despite her numerous achievements, Marta has faced challenges in past competitions. While she has participated in six World Cups, Brazil failed to advance from the group stage in the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand. Marta has also won Olympic silver at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, falling to the United States in both finals.

One of Marta’s most impressive records is being the all-time leading goal-scorer in World Cups for both men and women, with 17 goals in 23 appearances across six editions of the tournament. Her remarkable talent and dedication to the sport have solidified her legacy as one of the greatest players in women’s football history.
