Emi Martinez once again showcased his penalty-saving skills to help defending champions Argentina secure a spot in the Copa America semi-finals. The Villa goalkeeper saved the first two spot-kicks as Argentina defeated Ecuador 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time on Thursday.
This was not the first time Martinez has played a crucial role in a shootout, as he famously did for his country in the World Cup final against France in 2022 and more recently for Villa in the Europa Conference League against Lille. Martinez expressed his determination to keep going in the tournament, stating that both he and his teammates were not ready to go home as they are champions of the world and deserved to move forward.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni also acknowledged Martinez’s vital contribution to the victory, praising the goalkeeper for coming through when it mattered most. Martinez’s heroics in the penalty shootout once again proved to be the difference for Argentina in a crucial match.
