WHO’s Operational Update on Health Emergencies is a monthly publication that showcases WHO’s efforts in preparedness and emergency response to health crises worldwide. The update emphasizes WHO’s strategic, evidence-based, and science-driven support in partnership with countries to deliver rapid response and strengthen resilience against future health threats.
As of May 15, 2024, WHO is actively responding to 41 graded emergencies around the world. These emergencies include 8 Grade-3 emergencies, 7 protracted Grade-3 emergencies, 11 Grade-2 emergencies, 11 protracted Grade-2 emergencies, and 4 Grade-1 emergencies. Graded emergencies are acute public health events that require WHO’s moderate response (Grade-2) or major/maximal response (Grade-3), and if they persist for more than six months, they may transition to protracted emergencies. WHO updates the figures on graded emergencies regularly based on input from the organization’s three levels.
In 2024, WHO released US$ 23.9 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies (CFE) to address 23 health emergencies. The largest allocations were for the Dengue Global Outbreak, Israel/occupied Palestinian territories hostilities, and the Northern Ethiopia Humanitarian Response.
The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) supported 27 deployments in 2024, with the highest number of deployments in response to the escalation of violence in Israel and occupied Palestinian territories, the Greater Horn of Africa Drought and Food Insecurity, and the cholera outbreak in Zambia.
OpenWHO.org, an online platform, had a total of 8.6 million enrollments in 276 public health courses in 72 national and local languages, with 305,000 enrollments in 2024 alone.
In 2024, Standby Partners aided WHO’s response to 7 graded emergencies through 16 new deployments of surge personnel to 10 WHO offices. WHO actively participates in the Standby Partner Network and the International Humanitarian Partnership to enhance emergency response efforts.
