McKinsey advises aspiring interns to become proficient in asking artificial intelligence questions if they wish to excel in their summer internship, according to reports. Liz Hilton Segel, McKinsey’s chief client officer, emphasized the importance of learning to communicate effectively with AI as an essential skill for young consultants. She encouraged interns to become skilled prompt engineers, highlighting the significance of understanding how to interact with AI technology to generate valuable insights.

McKinsey has been at the forefront of leveraging generative AI tools to enhance efficiency and productivity among its consultants. The firm’s revenue growth last year was partially attributed to new projects involving AI technology. In an effort to streamline operations and facilitate client engagement, McKinsey has introduced its own generative AI tools like Lilli, named after one of the first women to work in professional services at the firm. Lilli aims to consolidate the organization’s knowledge base and capabilities, enabling employees to focus their efforts on higher-value tasks.

By effectively utilizing tools like Lilli, consultants can reduce time spent on routine tasks and devote more energy to client interactions and strategic analysis. Erik Roth, a senior partner at McKinsey overseeing Lilli’s development, reported that a significant portion of consultants have integrated the tool into their workflow, resulting in substantial time savings. With the ability to generate millions of prompts and responses, AI technology has revolutionized how consultants engage with information, demonstrating the potential to enhance productivity and effectiveness within the workforce.
