Meloni’s Call for Italy to Play a Stronger Role in the EU

Giorgia Meloni made a bold move by delivering a scathing attack on the negotiation methods used by European leaders in the Italian Parliament. Specifically, she criticized the “fireplace” logic and the “anti-democratic method” employed in the negotiations for top positions using the “conventio ad excludendum” approach. At the upcoming crucial European council meeting to decide the future commission’s structure, Prime Minister must ask for a mandate from the Chambers to secure an important role, possibly a vice presidency for Italy. Meloni promised to outdo the Democratic Party, which had secured the appointment of former Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni as Commissioner for the Economy in the outgoing European executive.

In her communication to the Parliament, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of fighting illegal immigration, a priority also mentioned by Ursula von der Leyen in her application for a third mandate. Meloni criticized the exclusion of Conservative groups in the negotiations for the new EU executive, emphasizing her group’s rise as a significant political force in Europe. She expressed her reluctance to ally with the left and highlighted the shortcomings of the outgoing commission’s ideological rules.

Meloni aims to secure the best possible position for Italy in the negotiations for the new commission. She stressed the importance of the personal relationship she has built with von der Leyen and hinted at the possibility of a vice-presidency with a crucial delegation to Italy in exchange for supporting the new commission. Meloni warned against joining a fragile majority in the European Parliament and highlighted the dissatisfaction of European citizens with the current state of affairs within the European Union.

The Prime Minister also addressed the issue of the inhuman death of Satnam Sigh and emphasized the need to combat gangmastering in Italy. She criticized the exclusionary tactics used by EU leaders against Conservatives and the right and pledged to continue fighting for democracy both in Italy and Europe.

Meloni called for a reevaluation of Europe’s priorities and approach, emphasizing the need for less centralization and more decision-making power for national states. She highlighted the growing discontent among European citizens with the European institutions and stressed the urgent need for a change in European policies. Meloni’s speech in the Chambers was a powerful call to action for reform within the European Union.
