Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is in June and James Harris, the founder of the Richmond organization “Men to Health,” spoke to 8News about spreading awareness. Harris shared his experience of growing up as a ward of the state, which made him realize a gap in mental health resources for men and boys in urban environments. His time in the military, including deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, further highlighted this disparity in mental health awareness among men.

Statistics show that 6 million men in the United States suffer from depression each year, but it is often underdiagnosed. Harris mentioned that depression can look different in men than in women, and this could contribute to misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis. Alongside the traditional symptoms of depression like isolation and lack of interest, Harris pointed out that men may also experience symptoms like anger, irritability, and disconnection.

Harris discussed the reasons why men and boys may not speak up about their mental health issues, attributing societal pressures and upbringing that discourage emotional vulnerability. For those around men experiencing mental health problems, Harris advised prioritizing their own well-being first before trying to offer support. He also recommended seeking support from positive influences, practicing self-care, and potentially seeking therapy to meet their own needs.
