Meta changes the label from ‘AI-powered’ to ‘AI Insights’ for more detailed information on image content

Meta has recently started using the tag ‘AI Information’ on images that have been created or edited with Artificial Intelligence (AI), instead of the label ‘Made with AI.’ This change is intended to provide more details about how the technology has been used and whether it involves minor modifications. The company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, announced this initiative in February to improve transparency in its tools, especially on social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Initially, the tags displayed on images generated or edited with AI were labeled as ‘Made with AI.’ However, this label applied to both images created entirely with AI and those that received some editing using AI tools. Some professional photographers expressed their concerns about this labeling, as even minor AI-based edits resulted in the ‘Made with AI’ tag, leading to misunderstandings.

In response to feedback, Meta has decided to change the label from ‘Made with AI’ to ‘AI Insights.’ This new label aims to provide users with more information about how AI has been employed in an image. By clicking on the tag, users can learn about the extent of AI use in the content and the reasons behind the labeling. Meta has also updated its website to clarify that the previous labels did not always meet users’ expectations and provide sufficient context.

To determine if content has been created with AI, Meta uses industry-standard indicators that other companies employ for similar purposes. If an image meets these criteria, it is labeled ‘Made with AI.’ However, the company acknowledges that some labeled content includes only minor edits made using AI tools. To clear up any confusion regarding the labeling, Meta has introduced the ‘AI Information’ tag to provide users with detailed information about the use of AI in the creation or editing of an image.
