Meta faces hefty antitrust fine for unfair practices

The Antitrust has fined Meta 3.5 million for unfair commercial practices related to the creation and management of Facebook and Instagram accounts. Specifically, the authority found that users were not given clear information about how their data would be collected and used for commercial purposes during the Instagram registration process. Additionally, in cases where accounts were suspended, Meta did not provide adequate communication for users to dispute the suspension.

The Antitrust also noted that Meta failed to disclose how it decides to suspend Facebook accounts and did not inform users of their options for contesting such suspensions. Meta was criticized for providing a short 30-day deadline for users to appeal the suspension of their accounts. These practices have since been halted by Meta during the proceedings.

Meta has expressed disagreement with the Antitrust’s decision and is considering further actions. The company has stated that changes were implemented for Italian users in August 2023 to address the issues raised by the Antitrust, including clearer information on data usage for personalized ads and improved options for appealing account suspensions. Meta appreciates the Antitrust’s recognition of their efforts to assist users in regaining control of their accounts.
