Meta rebrands ‘Made with AI’ label as ‘AI Insights’ for enhanced image content description

Meta has changed the labeling of images created or edited with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ‘AI Information’ instead of ‘Made with AI’. This change provides more insight into how AI technology was used and whether there were minor modifications involved.

In an effort to increase transparency, Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, announced in February that it would begin identifying realistic content generated by AI tools on its social networks. Currently, images using AI technology are labeled as ‘Made with AI’, but this label applies to a range of content, including images generated from scratch and those that have been retouched using AI tools.

Some professional photographers have expressed concerns about this labeling, as even images with minor AI retouching are automatically labeled ‘Made with AI’. Meta acknowledged this feedback and has now replaced the label with ‘AI Information’ for content using AI-powered tools, allowing users to learn more about how AI was used in the image.

The company has updated its labeling statement on AI-generated content to provide more context and address user expectations. Meta relies on industry-standard indicators to assess if content was created with AI and labels it accordingly. Although some content flagged as ‘Made with AI’ may only have minor AI modifications, the new ‘AI Information’ label aims to clarify the extent of AI use in the content.

Users can now click on the ‘AI Information’ label on Meta’s social networks to understand why the content was labeled and how AI was used. This update aims to provide users with more information and transparency about the use of AI technology in images across Meta’s platforms.
