Meta is requesting users of its Quest virtual reality ecosystem to provide their date of birth in order to tailor their account type and settings based on their age, as well as to prevent the account from being blocked. Users will receive a notification prompting them to re-enter their date of birth, which will not be publicly visible but will assist Meta in determining their age.

This process is mandatory, and users have 30 days from receiving the notification to complete it. Failure to enter the date of birth within this timeframe will result in the account being blocked, as stated on Meta’s official blog. Additionally, if the provided date of birth does not match the initial one, the user will need to provide an official identification document to verify their correct age.

Meta aims to enhance the privacy and security settings of users by categorizing them into different age groups: adults (over 18 years old), teenagers (between 13 and 17 years old), and preteens (between 10 and 12 years old). Accounts of minors, especially preteens, will have stricter restrictions and parental control tools associated with them to limit communication with other users and control the games and applications that can be used and downloaded.
