The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has declared an Ozone Action Day for the San Antonio area on Thursday, June 13, 2024. This will be the fourth such day this year, indicating that atmospheric conditions are likely to result in high levels of ozone air pollution in the region.

During Ozone Action Days, individuals who are particularly susceptible to the effects of air pollution, such as young children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues like asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, are advised to limit their time outdoors. Specifically, those with asthma or breathing difficulties should remain indoors whenever possible.

To promote air quality and reduce pollution levels, residents and businesses are encouraged to take preventative actions voluntarily. These include refueling vehicles after 6 p.m., avoiding drive-thrus at restaurants in favor of going inside, turning off vehicles instead of idling, adjusting thermostats higher during peak pollution hours (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.), carpooling or utilizing public transportation, and combining errands to reduce overall trips.

The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is emphasizing the importance of community action in improving air quality and conserving energy. Additional information on ground-level ozone can be found on Metro Health’s website for those seeking more detailed insights.
