Metrolink, a commuter rail operator in Southern California, has introduced new “smart crossing” technology at a grade crossing in San Juan Capistrano. This technology, known as the Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop, aims to eliminate the activation of crossing gates when a train approaches a station and stops before reaching the crossing. The introduction of this technology was made possible through a CRISI grant and was implemented at the Del Obispo Street crossing near the San Juan Capistrano station on June 1.

The purpose of the Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop system is to reduce wait times and prevent dangerous behavior such as drivers and pedestrians bypassing activated crossing gates. Metrolink’s goal is to enhance safety and efficiency in infrastructure by installing these systems at railway crossings near stations. The initial deployment of the system focuses on preventing southbound Metrolink trains stopping at San Juan Capistrano from activating the crossing gates until they leave the station.

While the system currently does not cover Pacific Surfliner trains, plans are in place to expand its use to include those trains in the future. Metrolink is collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to eventually install the system at 42 crossings located within a half-mile radius. In addition to the San Juan Capistrano crossing, seven other crossings on the Metrolink network in San Bernardino and Redlands are equipped with the Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop technology.

The implementation of this technology represents a significant step forward in enhancing safety and efficiency within the Metrolink system. By leveraging innovative solutions like the Wireless Crossing Nearside Station Stop, Metrolink aims to improve the overall commuter experience and ensure the well-being of residents in communities along its rail network.
