Mexico was eliminated from the Copa America after a scoreless draw against Ecuador at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. Ecuador will advance to the quarterfinals as the runner-up in Group B, while Venezuela will advance as the group winner.

In another match on Sunday, Venezuela defeated Jamaica 3-0. This victory marked Venezuela’s second time winning its group at the Copa America, with the first time being in 2007. It was also the first time Venezuela won all three of its group stage matches in the tournament. Venezuela’s all-time leading scorer, Salomón Rondón, scored his 43rd international goal, which is more than the rest of the squad combined. Jamaica, on the other hand, has still not earned a point at the Copa America and remains winless in nine games against Venezuela.

Ecuador’s draw with Mexico means they have reached the quarterfinals at three of the last four editions of the Copa America. This is a significant improvement since Ecuador had gone out in the group stage in six straight tournaments before this. Mexico, on the other hand, has struggled in its final group games in past tournaments, needing a win to advance three times but being eliminated each time. This year, Mexico opened the Copa America with a win but was still eliminated in the group stage.

Despite its strong history in the tournament, Mexico has only scored one goal in the current Copa America, tying for its fewest scored at a single tournament. Mexico and Ecuador have faced each other four times in Copa America history, with Mexico leading the all-time matchup.
