Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, originally from Kumpula-Natri, has served as a member of the European Parliament for ten years in Brussels and Strasbourg. However, soon she will find herself working in Arkadianmäki. Kumpula-Natri believes that even as a Member of Parliament, it is possible to maintain international networks. She wants to dispel the myth that a single Finnish MEP is insignificant amongst over 700 MEPs in the parliament. She emphasizes that MEPs have the ability to influence legislation and make important points.

Kumpula-Natri shares an example of her work in the European Parliament where she played a role in preventing the EU Commission’s proposal to ban fiber-based cups. She emphasizes that small details in legislation can have significant impacts and that the work of MEPs may not always be visible on the surface. Influencing in the European Parliament requires active participation and collaboration with political groups and other MEPs.

Kumpula-Natri recounts her accomplishment as the chief negotiator in the roaming regulation, which led to the removal of roaming charges in the EU. She points out the importance of keeping a sharp focus at work and finding time for passions. Kumpula-Natri’s interests have revolved around digital issues, energy, and the status of children. She believes that issues like Brexit, the pandemic, and security will be central in the next election period.

Reflecting on her decision to run for office in the parliamentary elections, Kumpula-Natri mentions family reasons that influenced her choice. By postponing her position in the Finnish Parliament until after her term in the European Parliament, she ensures that she can be present for her family during important years. Kumpula-Natri’s experience in the European Parliament has shaped her views on cooperation in the EU and the importance of security.
