In the past, a person’s education and professional career were two distinct phases that rarely overlapped. Individuals would complete their education and then start a career that could last for around 40 years. However, this era has come to an end as lifelong learning becomes increasingly important. José Manuel Mas, vice-rector for Academic Policy and Teaching Staff at ESIC, explains that the technological revolution has led to the retraining of professionals as jobs evolve. This means that individuals must continually update their skills and knowledge to stay relevant in the workforce.

Universities, vocational training centers, and companies all agree on the need for flexible education to meet the demands of lifelong learning. Microlearning, which offers short training modules, is becoming popular as it allows individuals to acquire specific skills or knowledge without committing to lengthy academic programs. Collaboration between universities and companies is critical to ensuring that training programs meet the needs of the market.

Balancing education and work can be challenging, especially for adults with other obligations. Clara Sanz, general secretary of Vocational Training at the Ministry of Education, emphasizes the importance of offering training options that are compatible with individuals’ lifestyles. Microcredentials provide a solution by allowing people to access training in smaller, more manageable segments.

The success of microcredentials depends on collaboration with the business sector. Universities need to align their training programs with the needs of employers to ensure that individuals have access to relevant and up-to-date skills. In addition, ongoing training opportunities democratize access to education and enhance employability for all professionals, not just recent graduates.

In Spain, the government has allocated funding to train 60,000 people in two years using microcredentials. Universities are working to create a national registry of microcredentials to facilitate access to training programs. The accreditation of professional skills is also gaining prominence as it empowers workers and enhances their employability.
