Jordan Mills from Matanzas and Mackenzie Roy from Spruce Creek were honored as the athlete of the year award winners at the Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards on June 3 at Ocean Center Arena. The event received support from Halifax Health, making it a successful and memorable night for all involved. The finalists for the boys’ athlete of the year award were Colby Cronk from Flagler Palm Coast and Elijah Walker from Mainland, while Aurielle Reavis from Atlantic and Kylie Watson from Seabreeze were the finalists for the girls’ award.

Mills, a senior at Matanzas, excelled in three different sports throughout the year. His outstanding performance as the team’s second-leading tackler with 69 solo stops in football, along with his contributions in wrestling, where he went 52-0 and won the Class 2A state championship at 190 pounds, showcased his athletic versatility. Additionally, Mills was a standout in track and field, qualifying for regionals and being recognized as the area’s top 400-meter hurdler. His accomplishments earned him spots on the All-Area first teams in football and wrestling, with second-team recognition in track and field.

On the other hand, Roy, a junior at Spruce Creek, impressed in cross country, soccer, and track and field during the 2023-24 school year. She placed fourth in Class 4A in cross country, ran a top time of 18:05.5, and scored goals for her school’s soccer team. Roy continued her success in track and field, finishing as a runner-up in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the Class 4A finals. These achievements led to Roy receiving All-Area recognition in all three sports, establishing her as a standout athlete at Spruce Creek.

The Volusia-Flagler High School Sports Awards, a part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards program, celebrates the accomplishments of student-athletes in the region. It provides a platform to recognize and honor the talent and dedication of young athletes, making it a prestigious event within the community.
