Mine Safety & Health Administration launches national initiative to reduce workplace fatalities and injuries

The Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration will be hosting its second annual ‘Stand Down to Save Lives’ day on May 22. This day is part of a national campaign aimed at encouraging the mining community to take preventive measures to reduce fatalities and injuries in mines. The initiative follows a recent coal mine fatality in Wyoming County on May 16, prompting the need for increased safety measures.

MSHA is urging miners, operators, and unions to dedicate time during this week to promote the importance of safety and health in and around mines in the United States. Agency leaders and staff will be visiting mines across the country as part of educational and outreach efforts to minimize fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses in the mining industry.

Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Chris Williamson emphasized the significance of ‘Stand Down to Save Lives’ as an opportunity for the mining community to prioritize and commit to ensuring the health and safety of all miners. He encouraged everyone in the mining sector to participate in the event on May 22, underscoring the importance of collaboration in enhancing safety and health standards for miners.
