Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan recently met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna to discuss issues related to the safe and secure operation of Armenia’s nuclear power plant. The discussions centered around ensuring compliance with IAEA recommendations and standards for the plant. Mirzoyan highlighted Armenia’s commitment to nuclear energy and its efforts to extend the life of the plant until 2036 while exploring new opportunities in the field.

During the meeting, Mirzoyan also expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation provided by the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The ministers exchanged ideas on various projects in energy and healthcare, particularly focusing on oncology and radiation medicine initiatives. These collaborations aim to enhance mutual benefits and cooperation between Armenia and the IAEA.

In recent years, Azerbaijan has raised concerns about the Armenian nuclear power plant’s potential threat to the region. In response, measures have been proposed to address these concerns, including petitions to close the Metsamor nuclear power plant, located close to the border. Despite these challenges, Armenia remains committed to nuclear energy as a strategic cornerstone, actively cooperating with the IAEA to ensure safety and meet all obligations.

Overall, the discussions between Mirzoyan and Grossi underscored the importance of international cooperation in nuclear safety and energy initiatives. Despite external pressures and concerns, Armenia remains dedicated to its nuclear energy strategy and ongoing collaboration with global organizations like the IAEA.
