MLB to take action against umpire Pat Hoberg after sports betting probe

Major League Baseball has announced plans to discipline umpire Pat Hoberg after an investigation into a possible violation of sports gambling policies. The commissioner’s office stated on Friday that Hoberg has chosen to appeal the penalty imposed by MLB, though the nature of the violation and the specific punishment were not disclosed. The league emphasized that while there was no evidence indicating that Hoberg’s officiating compromised any games, they deemed it necessary to take disciplinary action. Due to Hoberg’s decision to appeal, further comments on the matter will be reserved until the appeal process is completed.

The investigation into Hoberg began during this year’s spring training, resulting in his temporary removal from the field until the probe concluded. Hoberg, who is 37 years old, officiated his first Major League Baseball game in 2014 and became a full-time umpire in 2017. Notably, he earned a flawless rating on his strike zone calls during Game 2 of the 2022 World Series between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. Additionally, Hoberg worked as an umpire in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and was selected to officiate the “Field of Dreams Game” in August 2021, marking the first MLB game held in his home state of Iowa.

Prior to his tenure as a big league umpire, Hoberg gained experience in various minor league systems such as the Pacific Coast League, the Texas League, and the Florida State League. His roots in Iowa and dedication to the sport have contributed to his success in umpiring at the highest level. This information was provided by The Associated Press, offering a comprehensive look into the situation surrounding Pat Hoberg’s disciplinary measures within Major League Baseball.
