More than 4,500 individuals sign up for USF’s new course focusing on mental health in the workplace

There has been a rise in mental health issues in the workplace nationwide, with 76% of workers reporting at least one symptom of a mental health condition in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. To combat this trend, the University of South Florida has launched a new online course called Mental Health & Wellness in the Workplace. In its first year, over 4,500 working professionals from top companies in the U.S. and around the world have enrolled in the course.

The course, a collaboration between the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and USF’s College of Behavioral and Community Sciences, focuses on teaching participants how to deal with mental health obstacles, build healthy teams, and support employees. It also helps individuals recognize mental and behavioral issues, including trauma and suicide, which are on the rise.

According to Julie Serovich, dean of the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences, the course is free because the goal is to make a difference rather than profit. She emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health concerns, especially in times of crisis. The course consists of seven two-hour sessions and is open to the public.

Enrollment in the course is available for anyone interested in learning more about mental health and wellness in the workplace. The curriculum covers a range of topics aimed at helping individuals navigate mental health challenges in the workplace effectively.
