The Ministry of Environment, as part of a monitoring operation in the center of the country, recently discovered mosquitoes infected with the West Nile fever virus near Ben Gurion International Airport. In response, the Ministry instructed the Airports Authority to expand monitoring and destruction of mosquito breeding grounds in the airport’s vicinity. Specialized pest control teams are actively identifying and capturing mosquitoes for analysis, and virological tests are conducted to detect the presence of West Nile fever. If infected mosquitoes are found, local authorities are alerted to eliminate the source immediately.
In addition to these efforts, the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health have issued guidelines for the public to reduce the risk of contracting West Nile fever. Recommendations include cleaning public sewers, draining standing water sources that serve as mosquito habitats, and ensuring all containers that collect water are removed, covered, or turned over to prevent breeding. Preventive measures against mosquito bites such as applying repellent, wearing protective clothing, installing insect repellents in rooms, using fans, installing insect screens, and reporting breeding hazards to local authorities are also suggested.
The Ministry reminds the public to report any hazards, such as sewer breaks or standing water, to local authorities, as well as take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito breeding and bites. These efforts aim to safeguard public health and prevent the spread of diseases carried by mosquitoes.
