Bend Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a motor home Saturday morning in the area of homeless camps north of Juniper Ridge known as “Dirt World.” The fire was reported around 9 a.m. by several people who saw a large smoke column off Highway 97 near milepost 131. Bend Fire sent an engine and support vehicle to the scene, while Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies also responded to find a motor home fully involved in a fire. The fire was eventually put out by the Bend Fire units, who then began an investigation.
According to Bend Fire Inspector/Investigator Jason Kamperman, the motor home’s single occupant had informed a witness of the fire but left the scene before first responders arrived. The fire remains under investigation, as reported by Kamperman in a news release Saturday evening. This was the second fire in the general area in two days, with an unoccupied 24-foot travel trailer going up in flames Thursday morning. The cause of that fire was unable to be determined.
