Former Oxford United promotion hero Josh Murphy has decided to leave the club and has officially signed with Portsmouth. The 29-year-old winger turned down a new deal at Oxford and has joined Portsmouth on a three-year contract, with the option for an additional 12 months. Murphy played a pivotal role in Oxford’s promotion as he scored both goals in the League One play-off final against Bolton at Wembley.

Having previously played in the Championship and Premier League for Norwich City and Cardiff City, Murphy brings a wealth of experience to Portsmouth. He joined Oxford in 2022 and made 62 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho praised Murphy’s abilities and expressed his excitement about adding him to the squad.

Portsmouth faced competition for Murphy’s signature this summer, but Mousinho’s relationship with the player from their time at Oxford played a key role in securing the deal. Murphy’s inconsistent performances throughout his career will be a point of concern, but his potential to deliver at a high level is evident. Portsmouth will rely on Murphy to make an impact on the wing and fill the void left by the departure of Norwich loanee Abu Kamara.
