NASA Requests Input on Space Technology Requirements; Statement from Kurt Vogel

NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate is reaching out to the U.S. aerospace community for input on nearly 190 space technology shortfalls or needs for future space exploration and science missions. This feedback will help to refine the agency’s strategy for prioritizing technology development investments.

According to Kurt Vogel, associate administrator for space technology at NASA Headquarters in Washington, the agency is shifting to a more open and collaborative approach to better prioritize efforts and align with stakeholder needs. This will ensure that investments are maximized for the greatest impact.

The specific critical tech shortfalls that NASA is seeking feedback on include areas such as cryogenic fluid management, additive manufacturing, advanced propulsion, in-situ resource utilization, and thermal management systems. The goal is to gather data from industry, academia, government, and other stakeholders through virtual meetings over the next month.

Ultimately, NASA will create a final list of shortfall priorities based on the feedback received. This information will be used to assess ongoing technology development initiatives and guide new investments. The agency will also identify potential adjustments within its portfolio to address the most pressing needs in the realm of space technology.

Those interested in providing insights have until May 13 to do so. This collaborative effort will help shape the future direction of NASA’s space technology development and ensure that resources are being allocated in a way that truly benefits all stakeholders involved.
