Navigating Europe’s Reliance on China for Green Technology: A Wake-Up Call

Guests Janka Oertel, Director of the Asia Programme & Senior Policy Fellow at ECFR, and Alexander Lipke, Programme Coordinator of the Asia Programme at ECFR, will be joining us for a discussion on European de-risking pathways. This discussion will be chaired by Jana Puglierin, Head of ECFR Berlin & Senior Policy Fellow at ECFR.

Europe is currently grappling with the need to re-evaluate its approach in light of the strategic rivalry between China and the advanced industrial economies of the West. The concept of “de-risking” has emerged as a guiding principle for European leaders, especially when it comes to crucial green technologies on which Europe heavily relies. Policymakers are faced with the challenge of balancing economic, security, and climate concerns, as well as considering the impact of de-risking policies on third countries.

The recent ECFR Policy Brief, “Trust and trade-offs: How to manage Europe’s green technology dependence on China,” outlines the difficult political choices and competing priorities involved in each de-risking decision. Join us at our Berlin office for an informal discussion with Janka Oertel and Alexander Lipke, where we will delve into the nuances of different de-risking approaches over coffee and croissants. We will specifically focus on how these approaches affect climate priorities and their implications for third countries.

The central question of our conversation will be whether Chinese companies can be trusted to lead Europe’s green transition. To attend this in-person event, please register by sending an email to [email protected]. Registration is required for attendance.
