New Benefit for Health First Colorado Members: Doula Services Now Available

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) recently announced the addition of doula service coverage for Health First Colorado Medicaid members. This new benefit aims to improve outcomes in maternal health and outcomes for pregnant and parenting individuals. Doulas are non-clinical professionals who provide informational, physical, and emotional support before, during, and after childbirth. Their education and assistance can benefit pregnant or new mothers throughout the birthing experience.

HCPF stated that the addition of this benefit will enhance access to care for Health First Colorado members, improve birth-related outcomes, and help close health disparities. Research shows that doula support can help reduce epidural use, labor duration, low-birthweight and premature deliveries, and postpartum depression rates. It can also lead to reduced c-section rates, which are higher in the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) population and contribute to morbidity and mortality.

The doulas covered under this benefit include independent practicing doulas as well as those working in healthcare facilities or other group practices. HCPF has started enrolling doulas to support the new benefit, and those hired will be compensated as a Health First Colorado provider. They are seeking doulas who have formal training or prior demonstrated experience in the field.

Individuals interested in applying to be an HCPF doula can find more information on their website. This new benefit underscores HCPF’s commitment to providing Health First Colorado members with equitable, accessible, and supportive services for an empowering birthing experience.
