New CEO named for Hennepin County’s $400 million health insurance operation

Michael Herzing has been chosen as the next leader of Hennepin Health, Minnesota’s only county-owned health insurance program for residents on medical assistance. The Hennepin County Board made the decision to appoint Herzing as the CEO, with a unanimous vote on Tuesday, June 4. He has been serving as the interim director of Hennepin Health since the previous CEO, Anne Kanyusik Yoakum, stepped down in December.

With more than 35,000 members spread across three health plans, Hennepin Health operates with an annual budget of approximately $400 million, as outlined in its 2023 annual report. Herzing expressed his excitement about taking on the role, emphasizing the organization’s mission to improve residents’ health outcomes and address disparities in access to care. “We have an incredible mission,” he said during the board meeting.

Having been a part of Hennepin County since 2005, Herzing brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Prior to his role as interim director of Hennepin Health, he worked in the human services department for nine years, overseeing the access, aging, and disability services area. In his new role as CEO, Herzing will receive an annual salary of $200,000.

With his extensive background in the healthcare industry and commitment to improving community health, Herzing is well-equipped to lead Hennepin Health forward in fulfilling its mission and serving the residents of Hennepin County.
