Michigan Technological University is set to introduce a new Environmental Data Science program on campus this fall semester. The decision to expand program offerings comes in response to the growing need for data scientists in the field of environmental analysis. Dean of the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences, David Flashpohler, emphasizes that this unique program will provide students with hands-on experience in data collection and analysis in both classroom and lab settings.

The Environmental Data Science program builds upon the university’s existing data science program, which was first introduced in 2023. Michigan Tech originally launched its data science master’s program in 2014, recognizing the importance of understanding and interpreting data in today’s world. Associate Dean of Data Science Initiatives in the College of Computing, Laura Brown, highlights the significance of data literacy for all students on campus, regardless of their program focus.

The university acknowledges that data-driven decision-making is becoming increasingly important in various industries, including environmental sciences. By offering a dedicated Environmental Data Science program, Michigan Tech aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this rapidly evolving field.
