The Cherokee Nation recently announced new funding for health and wellness programs for community centers. All 86 community groups represented can benefit from the $2.1 million in funding aimed at promoting healthier living. Abby McLemore from Chewey mentioned the lack of resources in her town, highlighting the importance of the Cherokee Nation’s funding in providing new health opportunities, especially in smaller towns.
Cherokee Nation Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. emphasized that the 86 organizations are mainly located in rural areas without access to basic amenities, making them vital to their communities. In Marble City, a new community center has opened with fitness equipment, while the Kenwood center offers workout spaces, courts, and playing fields for traditional and modern games.
With each community group receiving $25,000 from the Cherokee Nation, they have the autonomy to decide how to utilize the funding. In addition to investing in new clinics and prevention efforts, the Cherokee Nation aims to decrease smoking and promote physical activity. The $25,000 grant will be an annual initiative, with plans to assist community groups in covering their electric bills to enhance their ability to assist their neighbors.
