The Israeli government has announced that Ron Shapira will replace Aharon Barak as its representative at the International Court of Justice, the UN’s highest judicial body. Barak resigned last month due to personal reasons and Shapira will now serve on the 15-judge panel responsible for judging the case where the Israeli state is being tried for genocide following a lawsuit initially filed by South Africa and joined by other countries.

Shapira, a lawyer and the rector of the Peres Academic Center in Rehovot, also teaches at Bar-Ilan University and Tel Aviv University. Barak, a Holocaust survivor with a long legal career, was appointed in January. Shapira has expressed his reservations about the ICJ, believing it to be untrustworthy and embodying various errors in legal discourse.

The ICJ recently ordered Israel to halt its military offensive on the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah and allow unrestricted entry for any UN commission investigating a possible genocide in Gaza. Shapira criticized Israel for not complying with the ICJ’s preliminary measures to prevent genocide in Gaza.
