The city of North Charleston has established a new department that is dedicated to mentoring and supporting the growth of small businesses. The Small Business Enterprise Department offers a wide range of services that cater to the specific needs of small business owners. These services include expert guidance, access to funding, networking opportunities, and training programs. Frank Ancrum, the manager of the department, describes these services as a “customized approach” designed to meet business owners at any stage of development.
Ancrum’s goal is to provide resources to business owners regardless of their experience level. He believes that access to resources can make a significant difference in the success of a business. The initiative was created by the new administration to serve as a hub for business owners to seek guidance and support. Ancrum encourages business owners to ask questions, regardless of how small they may seem.
One of the department’s first clients was a business owner with seven years of experience who sought advice on creating an LLC. This interaction highlighted the importance of providing a supportive environment where business owners feel comfortable seeking guidance. The establishment of the Small Business Enterprise Department is part of Mayor Reggie Burgess’ efforts to enhance economic development in North Charleston. Burgess recognizes the importance of small businesses as the backbone of the local economy and aims to provide essential resources and support for their success.
Before joining the city, Ancrum worked as a business owner in North Charleston, acting as a mentor and connector for other business owners. His transition to the role of department manager was a natural progression of his work in supporting businesses in the community. Through one-on-one consultations, Ancrum helps business owners with financial and business planning, marketing, and operational strategies. He assists businesses in transitioning from traditional marketing methods to developing a strong online presence through social media strategies.
