Fox Sports and AEG are teaming up to launch a new postseason college basketball tournament called the College Basketball Crown. This 16-team tournament will take place from March 31 to April 6, 2025, in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena. These venues have a history of hosting college basketball games, including the Pac-12 tournaments.

Teams that do not qualify for the NCAA tournament will be eligible to participate in the College Basketball Crown. The Big Ten, Big 12, and Big East conferences, whose games are broadcast on Fox, will each have two automatic entries into the tournament. The rest of the teams will be chosen by a committee.

Fox Sports executive vice president Jordan Bazant expressed excitement about the new tournament, stating that postseason college basketball is a thrilling time of year, and they are proud to be leading efforts to elevate the sport. The goal is to provide more opportunities for student-athletes to compete in high-quality postseason college basketball and for viewers to enjoy the competition for the College Basketball Crown.

The College Basketball Crown is expected to be a significant competitor to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The NCAA, which runs the NIT, recently changed its selection process to include more teams from power-six conferences. However, several schools, mostly from power conferences, have declined invitations to the NIT.

The NIT is college basketball’s oldest major postseason tournament, but the College Basketball Crown aims to offer a new and exciting alternative for teams and fans. The final four of the NIT was held in Las Vegas last year, reflecting a shift in postseason basketball competitions. This year’s NIT final is scheduled to take place in Indianapolis.
