New program offers assistance for diabetes patients at Mon Health at no cost

Mon Health patients now have the opportunity to participate in a free course called FARMacy through the Vandalia Health Network. This program aims to address social determinants of health such as where people live, their social support, financial distress, and access to healthcare and healthy food. These factors can significantly impact a person’s overall health and well-being.

The FARMacy course is specifically designed to provide resources and support for patients managing diabetes. Patients at Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital and Mon Health Medical Center can enroll in the 15-week course to learn more about food and nutrition. Participants will have access to fresh produce, receive cooking tips, and engage in physical education activities to promote healthier lifestyle choices.

Mon Health is committed to empowering patients with the tools and knowledge needed to live healthier lives. Melissa Lockwood, Chief Administrative Officer of Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital, emphasized the importance of providing education and resources for patients to maintain their health and well-being beyond hospital care. The goal is to make quality foods and health-conscious choices accessible and understandable for the community.

Only current patients of Mon Health Preston Memorial Hospital with a diabetes diagnosis, HBA1C level greater than 7, BMI over 30, and willingness to participate in weekly sessions are eligible for the FARMacy program. Enrollment for the program is currently open and will take place every Friday at the hospital starting on July 28.
