New technology aids firefighters and lifeguards in conducting emergency rescues.

The newest piece of fire and lifeguard rescue equipment in Encinitas has beachgoers excited as it hovers above them. Encinitas Fire Chief Josh Gordon mentioned that the equipment includes a regular and thermal camera as well as a PA system, all in one. The Encinitas Fire Department and Marine Safety Division recently received one larger drone and two smaller drones that will be used for land and sea rescues.

Gordon explained that the equipment will provide firefighters with visibility in situations where they might not be able to see clearly, such as a fire hotspot or a person stranded in the water. The drones will also be used to identify potential dangers like sharks in the water, ensuring that proper action can be taken quickly.

According to fire officials, the drones have already proven to be beneficial in rescue situations this year. Gordon mentioned specific instances where the drones were instrumental in locating victims, such as in rollover traffic accidents where victims were ejected from the vehicle. The thermal imaging cameras on the drones allow firefighters to locate victims more efficiently.

Training is underway for most of the fire department to operate the drones effectively. This will enable a quicker response time in emergency situations. Gordon expressed his confidence in the new equipment, stating that it will greatly enhance the department’s ability to carry out successful rescues.
