New Technology for Firefighters Introduced by DHS

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that a new helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device developed by Qwake Technologies will soon be available to fire departments across the country. This innovative technology, called C-THRU, will allow first responders to see through dark smoke, improving their ability to navigate hazardous environments.

Through a collaborative partnership with industry, the Department’s Science and Technology Directorate has worked with Qwake to develop this cutting-edge technology, which was funded through a 2020 contract aimed at enhancing fire safety equipment. With 400 prototype devices available, fire departments are encouraged to apply for this hands-free, lightweight device equipped with a high-speed thermal camera.

The C-THRU device not only provides a clearer, real-time view of the surroundings but also assists firefighters with navigation through turn-by-turn guidance. In the event that a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building, a mayday function can be activated to alert other C-THRU wearers in the area and facilitate their rescue. The system is designed to continuously improve through over-the-air software updates, similar to a smartphone.

Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of equipping first responders with advanced technology to enhance their safety and effectiveness. By leveraging emerging technology like C-THRU, the Department aims to address the challenges faced by firefighters and support their most urgent needs. Fire departments interested in adopting this innovative technology are encouraged to apply for the C-THRU device to enhance their capabilities and improve firefighter safety.
