The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is making a helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device available to fire departments across the country. This technology, developed by Qwake Technologies in Austin, Texas, was created through a 2020 contract with the DHS to enhance fire safety technology. Known as C-THRU, the device is now open for applications from fire departments seeking to improve their gear.
Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of providing first responders with advanced equipment to save lives and ensure firefighter safety. The DHS is collaborating with industry partners like Qwake to address challenges faced by first responders, using cutting-edge technology to meet their most pressing needs. There are 400 prototype devices available for fire departments to apply for.
C-THRU is a hands-free, lightweight device equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that captures the surrounding environment. This device offers a clearer, real-time view of the environment and assists firefighters in navigation, providing turn-by-turn guidance for backtracking. In the event that a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building, the device includes a mayday function to alert other C-THRU users in the area, enabling them to locate the distressed first responder.
Furthermore, the device will receive over-the-air software updates to enhance its functionality continuously. By leveraging emerging technology, the DHS aims to provide first responders with the tools and support they need to perform their duties effectively and safely in challenging situations. Fire departments can now apply for this innovative device to enhance their capabilities and improve response efforts.
