X Games announced on June 13th that it will be transitioning to a global, team-based format by 2026. This represents a significant departure from the current model, which includes separate winter and summer events focusing on various action sports. The new league will mirror Formula One, with teams comprised of athletes from different disciplines competing for individual and team points as well as prize money.
The global league will showcase both winter and summer action sports, with each league starting with four events and four teams. X Games plans to expand the program over time and collaborate with existing competitions to include signature events in their competition schedules. The goal of the new format is to provide athletes with more financial stability, benefits, and commercial opportunities.
Teams have not yet been chosen, but athletes will be selected through an industry-wide draft process. Those who are not selected for a team will still be eligible as alternate athletes. Professional winter sport athletes like Svea Irving and Nick Goepper have shared their excitement about the news, with Goepper noting the innovation and fresh ideas that X Games is bringing to the table, while Irving described the announcement as “huge.”
