Newcastle gives up on signing Everton’s Calvert-Lewin

Newcastle’s pursuit of Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has come to an end, as the reported £40m deal was deemed too costly by the club. Calvert-Lewin, who is entering the final year of his contract with Everton, is in talks over a new deal with the Toffees. The Englishman has scored 68 goals in 248 games for Everton since joining from Sheffield United for £1.5m in 2016.

Meanwhile, Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh will not be joining Everton in a separate deal. Instead, there is the possibility that Minteh could move to French side Lyon, who have shown interest in signing the young Gambian international. Minteh, who spent last season on loan at Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, scored 11 goals in 37 games under the management of new Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
