The recently discovered archive footage showcases the enthusiasm of the Tartan Army as they supported Scotland during their World Cup campaign in Germany 50 years ago. The fans can be seen sporting flared jeans, long hair, and tartan bunnets, exuding high spirits as they cheered on their national team.
Some fans had taken the adventurous route of hitch-hiking to Dortmund to attend Scotland’s first match of the 1974 tournament. Despite being low on funds, many were determined to stay on the continent for as long as the team remained in the competition. One enthusiastic supporter even joked, “We came over on the ferry by car from Dover to Ostend. We’ll be going back that way after Scotland win the cup!”
Now, 50 years later, Scotland is once again starting their campaign in Germany, this time against the hosts in the opening match of the 2024 Euros. The nostalgia of the past combined with the excitement of the present creates a sense of anticipation and unity among fans as they come together to support their team once more.
