Hamas recently revealed the use of a Chinese-made HJ-8L guided anti-tank missile in an attack against the IDF in Rafah. The missile caused a fire, which was later extinguished by a Caterpillar 966G. The HJ-8L missile is part of the Chinese HJ-8 family and has been in production since 1985. The L model, or “Light” model, was developed following lessons from conflicts in Bosnia, requiring a lighter model.

The HJ-8L launcher can carry two missiles with different ranges. Other models of the HJ-8 missile are used by various armies around the world, including Egypt, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. The missiles are wire-guided, allowing operators to make course corrections during flight. The L model is lighter due to advanced microelectronics systems in its fire control system, reducing its weight to 22.5 kg.

The HJ-8 system includes components from Western-made weapons and has been developed through reverse engineering, copying elements from American, Franco-German, and British systems. Concerns have been raised about China’s supply of weapons to Hamas, including anti-aircraft weapons. It is believed that Iran may have trained Hamas members on using these Chinese-made weapons.
