Jacob Carney, a former Manchester United and Sunderland goalkeeper, recently signed a two-year deal with Newport County AFC, pending international clearance and approval from the Football League. Carney, who featured for Sunderland’s first team against Manchester United’s Under-21s in the Football League Trophy in 2021, expressed his excitement about joining Newport in a statement on the club’s website. He cited the club’s philosophy, as well as the opportunity to meet his new teammates during pre-season, as reasons for his decision to sign with Newport.
Carney, a product of the Manchester United academy, signed his first professional contract with the club in May 2020. He later spent time on loan at Portadown in Northern Ireland before joining Sunderland under manager Lee Johnson in 2021. During his time with Sunderland, Carney played for the Black Cats under-23s and went on loan to Spanish club CD Castellon, where he helped them achieve promotion from Spain’s third tier.
At Newport County, Carney will be vying for playing time with experienced goalkeeper Nick Townsend, who established himself as the number one stopper at the League Two club last season. With the release of regular deputy Jonny Maxted at the end of the campaign, Carney adds depth to Newport’s goalkeeping roster.
Carney’s signing is part of a series of new additions made by Newport County AFC in the last few days, with the goalkeeper becoming the sixth new signing of the week. His arrival adds competition and depth to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
