Residents of the Seven Oaks Apartments in Newport News reported hearing multiple gunshots early Sunday morning. There was a loud argument followed by a series of gunshots in the courtyard at the complex. At least one woman took cover below her windows upon hearing the shots. One resident mentioned hearing more than 10 rounds fired in quick succession.

Police were alerted to the shooting at the Seven Oaks Apartments by the activation of the city’s ShotSpotter system. This system is designed to detect audio signals of gunshots and determine their location. There were no 911 calls made from the location of the shooting, the police department said.

The victim, Wayne Hill, 34, was found lying in the grass between the apartments and the fence lining 36th Street. He had sustained a gunshot wound and later died in the hospital. Hill had ties to Hampton, though residents of Seven Oaks said he frequented the complex regularly.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting and the police have not disclosed a motive. This incident marks Newport News’ 10th homicide of 2024, with 11 killings reported at this time in 2023.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Crime Line anonymously at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip online. Your assistance could help bring justice to the victim and his family.
