NHL announces retirement of legendary Wisconsin hockey player

Former Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey player Joe Pavelski made the announcement that he is retiring from hockey after an impressive 18 seasons in the NHL. The 39-year-old player and the Dallas Stars were recently eliminated in the league’s West Final against the Oilers with a 4-2 series loss.

Pavelski, a native of Plover, Wisconsin, was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the seventh round of the 2003 NHL Draft before joining the Badgers. During his time at the University of Wisconsin, he spent three successful seasons as a key member of the men’s hockey program from 2004-2006, leading the team in overall points during their 2006 National Championship-winning season.

After his college career, Pavelski spent 13 years with the San Jose Sharks, participating in numerous playoff games, including the team’s journey to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, where they were defeated by the Penguins. He then went on to join the Dallas Stars in 2019, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 but falling short against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pavelski accumulated impressive stats, including 475 goals and 1,068 points in 1,332 NHL games. His 74 postseason goals are the most by any American-born player in NHL history. Today, Joe Pavelski’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable journey in professional hockey.
