Nine female athletes, including tennis star Venus Williams, will be honored with Barbie dolls, according to an announcement made by Mattel, Inc. The dolls are part of Barbie’s 65th-anniversary celebration, recognizing the impact of sports in promoting self-confidence, ambition, and empowerment among young girls. The iconic doll made its first appearance in 1959.

In addition to Venus Williams, the other athletes being immortalized by Barbie dolls are gymnasts Rebeca Andrade and Alexa Moreno, soccer players Mary Fowler and Christine Sinclair, boxer Estelle Mossely, swimmer Federica Pellegrini, paratriathlete Susana Rodriguez, and track and field runner Ewa Swoboda. Each doll represents a different country where the athlete hails from.

Venus Williams expressed her gratitude, stating, “Throughout my career, I’ve always been driven by the idea of shattering glass ceilings and staying true to myself, and Barbie’s mission couldn’t resonate more deeply with that ethos.” She sees this collaboration with Barbie as an opportunity to inspire young girls to believe in their dreams.

Williams, who has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, five Wimbledon titles, and four Olympic gold medals, has been recognized for her efforts to inspire social change within the sports industry. Mattel commended her for courageously overcoming obstacles and serving as a role model for young girls.
