NIPSCO is expanding its use of advanced metering infrastructure technology, with plans to upgrade about 870,000 gas meters with a communications module that allows for automated and remote collection of gas metering information. Installation is scheduled to start in July 2024 and continue through the end of 2026. According to John Sabotnik, NIPSCO Director of Major Projects, this upgrade will help deliver energy safely and reliably, drive operational efficiencies, and enhance customer experience.
By installing the Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) communications module, NIPSCO will be able to provide customers with more frequent and enhanced usage data. Immediate and future benefits to customers include greater visibility into gas consumption, access to on-demand meter reading, and enhanced customer service through increased frequency of meter readings.
In addition to the gas meter upgrades, NIPSCO has also announced the deployment of upgraded electric meters in Highland for 3,000 residential customers. The company is now moving forward with the mass deployment of 490,000 electric meters to residential and commercial customers, starting in May 2024 and expected to continue through 2027. This is a key milestone in NIPSCO’s technological advancement and grid modernization efforts.
