Nisha defeated Alina Shauchuk and Adela Hanzlickova to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the wrestling competition. In the semi-finals, she faced off against Alexandra Anghel and managed to clinch a victory with a score of 8-4, earning herself an Olympic quota in the process. This marked India’s fifth quota in wrestling for the Paris 2024 Olympics, all of which have been in women’s freestyle.
The previous quotas were obtained by Antim Panghal, Vinesh Phogat, Anshu Malik, and Reetika Hooda in various competitions leading up to the games. Unfortunately, Mansi Ahlawat was unable to secure a quota in the women’s 62kg category, losing in the round of 16.
Despite the success in women’s freestyle wrestling, India’s hopes for representation in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Olympics were dashed when Sunil Kumar was eliminated in the repechage of the men’s 87kg division. Sunil won his first repechage bout but was defeated in the second, ending India’s chances in this category.
This will be the second consecutive Summer Games without Indian representation in Greco-Roman wrestling, with the last time being at Rio 2016. However, six Indian men’s freestyle wrestlers are set to begin their quest for Olympic quotas in their respective weight categories, starting on Saturday.
