nLIGHT, a supplier of high-power semiconductor and fiber lasers, and EOS, a global leader in additive manufacturing technologies, have agreed to a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on a joint strategic technology partnership that will bring nLIGHT’s beam shaping lasers to EOS’ metal AM systems. This partnership will involve the integration of complementary laser-based technologies to optimize the additive manufacturing (AM) light engine for robust industrial 3D printing production.

The collaboration between nLIGHT and EOS aims to offer beam shaping and light engine optimization capabilities digitally, allowing customers to access various beam profiles through EOS software to enhance their printing efficiency. AMCM, a company within the EOS Group that focuses on customized AM solutions, has already integrated the programmable AFX laser into its metal AM systems. The LOI between nLIGHT and EOS builds upon this existing relationship.

nLIGHT’s programmable AFX laser provides seven different beam profiles in a single laser, offering a range of spot sizes for precision contours and faster printing speeds. The AFX laser has shown significant improvements in printing speeds for materials like 316L steel and aluminum, achieving speeds up to three times faster than a standard 400W process.

Scott Keeney, CEO of nLIGHT, expressed excitement about the partnership with EOS, a company that shares nLIGHT’s commitment to enhancing the additive manufacturing industry. Marie Langer, CEO of EOS, highlighted the importance of integrating nLIGHT’s beam shaping and laser technologies into EOS’ metal AM systems to meet the evolving demands of customers.

nLIGHT and EOS aim to release AFX-enabled machines to customers by late-2024, providing enhanced productivity and performance in metal additive manufacturing processes.
